Bernadette Schlosser Obituary

Bernadette Schlosser

1962 - 2019

On July 21, 2019, Bernadette Schlosser passed away at the age of 57 years. Bernadette was born January 13, 1962 to Bill and Gladyne Hoffman at the Swan River Valley Hospital. She lived in the Swan Valley District until Bill’s passing in 1963 with her parents and older sister Willetta, after which they moved into the Town of Swan River. She attended Heyes School, the Junior High, and Swan Valley Regional Secondary School, graduating in 1980. After graduation she worked for Hood Texaco at the bulk plant. She enjoyed the interactions over coffee with customers. In 1991, after the bulk plant closed, she began her career with the Swan Valley School Division as an Educational Assistant, focusing with working with students who required special need. The connections she made were lasting and impacting.

After working at SVRSS, Taylor School, and Ecole South School, she was given the opportunity to work at the Swan Valley School Division Office with the speech and language department. Working in the office made her feel like it was always more than just a job.

In 1991, Bernadette met Terry Schlosser in an unexpected, yet likely place, Elks Bingo. In June 1994, their first daughter Brittany was born. Shortly after, in September 1995 Rebecca joined the family. Over the years, a number of pets would also complete the family.

Bernadette was an active member at the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Royal Purple, Sylvia’s Angels, Band Booster Bingo, and Elks Bingo. Her involvement with Elks trips and activities with Terry and their daughters were bonding experiences that offered her a way to visit many of the attractions within Manitoba and strengthened her desire to help within the community.

Over the years, Bernadette proved how she valued being a mom and valued education. She raised two daughters and supported them through their university journeys, and helped nurture many of the strays that were brought home. She adopted many of the kittens that found their way into her heart. Bernadette was what many of her daughters’ friends considered a “second mom”, and was always available for a hug or two when “one was just not enough”.

Bernadette is survived by her husband of almost 21 years Terry, daughters Brittany and Rebecca, sister Willetta, her “fur-grandchildren”, as well as numerous extended family. She was predeceased by her parents Bill and Gladyne and half-brother Terry.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. from Trinity Lutheran Church in Swan River, Manitoba with Pastor Bob Lewis officiating. Interment followed in Birchwood Cemetery.
