Bill Toderash Obituary

Bill Toderash

1936 – 2019

On June 7, 2019 Bill Toderash of Swan River, Manitoba passed away at the Swan Valley Health Centre at the age of 82 Years.

Bill was born on a farm near Stenen, Saskatchewan in 1936, the 4th of 7 children.  In those days, schooling was relatively limited, with more important duties at home being considered good reason to skip school, which was often the case for Bill.  Baseball became a favourite sport for Bill during his school years, which he became quite good at, especially as back catcher.  Other highlights of his young life included comic books, western movies (in black and white), and watching chuckwagon races.

His first major pride and joy would undoubtably have been his first car purchase in 1953, a 1929 Ford Model A, 4 cylinder, which he purchased for $100.00.

His work life began at about age 15 with farm labour, lumber mills, and a plywood factory where he was quickly promoted to lathe operator.  He then secured a job as a mechanic, later earning his mechanic's license and remaining at the Co-op Garage in Swan River for 38 years, with many Valley members appreciating his mechanical expertise with their vehicles.

He always enjoyed working with horses and in the 1960's and 1970's took that interest to a whole new level when he decided to join the sport of pony chuckwagon racing, which continued for approximately 12 years.  Training and looking after the horses became a family affair with his 2 boys helping out.  He also learned the fine art of building chuckwagon wheels, which would be put to good use again when his son's wife's Dad and him would build a democrat together.

He married Vivian Todosichuk on August 1, 1958, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in 2018.  They have been residents of Swan River to this day.

Bill is survived by his wife Vivian, sons Glen (Gloria) Toderash of Kenville, Manitoba and Clarence (Val) Toderash of Brandon, Manitoba, brothers Peter (Lois) Toderash of Ste. Genevieve, Manitoba, Steve Toderash of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, sister Ann Ilsey of Winnipeg, Manitoba as well as 2 grandchildren and 8 nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by his parents George and Mary Toderash, brothers John and Mike Toderash, sister Lena Kostur and daughter Cheryl (Toderash) Todosichuk.

A funeral service was held from the Chapel of Swan Valley Funeral Services on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Kevin Sprong officiating. Interment took place in the Birchwood Cemetery, Swan River, Manitoba.
