Cora Apperley
1920 - 2018
It is with much sorrow, we announce the passing of our mom Cora Apperley after a short illness on May 17, 2018 at the age of 98 years.
Our mom is survived by her family Frank Apperley [Evelyn], Barb McCullough [Cameron], Dot Field [Bernie], Candace Demoline, Jerry Apperley [Susan], and Trevor Apperley [Arianne] and daughter-in-law Mary Anne. Mom had twenty-three grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces, as well as a brother Dawson Foster and sister Roberta Dahlin.
Mom was predeceased by her eight brothers and two sisters and her parents, son Ken Apperley, granddaughter Whitney Field, and son in law Art Demoline and her husband Frank Apperley Sr., companions Ted Lemon, Lloyd [Buster] Holness.
Mom was born on a farm in the District of Maloneck, Saskatchewan just outside of Pelly, Saskatchewan. Mom attended a country school there and graduated from Grade 8 in 1935. She married Frank Apperley Sr. and moved to Swan River at a young age.
Mom worked in various areas in the food industry. Mom took the food supervisory course in 1968 and graduated from University of Guelph Ontario and retired from the Swan Valley Hospital as the Food Supervisor.
Mom loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always available to grandma sit anyway in Canada as needed. The grandchildren anxiously awaited the cookies and other baking goodies that she would always bring with her.
Mom was an active member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, TOPS and the United Church. Mom would help with whatever she could within the Legion ladies’ functions and catering. Mom made friends within these organizations that lasted a life time.
Mom was a loyal fan of the program Coronation Street and rarely missed an episode and we all knew we could not call her when her program was on. Mom enjoyed watching curling and cheered for Jennifer Jones and Mike McEwen or in fact anyone who represented Manitoba.
Mom loved to travel and visited Hawaii and Palm Springs many times. Other destinations were Mexico and Europe. Mom especially loved Las Vegas to go shopping and do some occasional gambling she went many times with her daughters and Trevor. In fact the last time she travelled to Las Vegas she was 95 years old and with her 86 year old sister along for the first time.
Mom was a follower of the British Royal Family all her life and was well versed in their lives and activities.
Mom was very social, loved to laugh and was known for her smile, sense of humour and her wit. We were fortunate that we had our mom in our lives for as long as we did. We will miss her and think about her everyday and reminisce about favourite times with her. Rest in peace we love you.
A memorial service was held from St. Andrew’s United Church on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Velda Dahlin officiating. Interment followed in the Heritage Memorial Gardens Columbarium.
