It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Donald James Haggarty on January 19, 2018 at the Swan Valley Health Centre in Swan River, Manitoba.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty-five years, Lillian, and his children, daughter Cheryl (Brad) and son James (Vicky) and children; grandchildren Melissa, Cody, Kaylyn, and Dallin; one great grandson Landon; youngest brother, Edwin (Carolyn) and many other relatives.
Jim was born January 7, 1927 on the family farm near Birch River, the eldest of seven boys.
He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Mabel Haggarty; and brothers Clayton, Leonard, Russell, Ronald, and Alvin; and grandchildren Braden and Kent.
Jim and Lillian were married June 19, 1952 in Birch River and celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary in June 2017.
Jim began his career with the Manitoba Department of Highways in the 1940s at an early age and retired in 1992. He was an avid curler and loved to go hunting and fishing. He also contributed his time to his community by volunteering in various organizations including Birch River Legion Branch No. 48.
Thank you to Doctors Burnside, Gouda, and Wickert and all the caring staff at Swan Valley Health Centre who took such good care of Jim during the final days of his illness. Thank you also to Dr. Theodore for the many years he was Jim’s family physician.
We will miss you dearly and you will remain in our hearts forever.
Evening viewing and prayer was held on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Swan Valley Funeral Services, Swan River, Manitoba.
Funeral service was held at Birch River Legion Hall at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 24, 2018 with Pastor Roy Jamieson officiating. Interment followed at Crandell Cemetery, Birch River, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Birch River Legion Hall.
