Ernest Assoignon Obituary

Ernest Louis Assoignon

1924 – 2019

Ernest was born in Fife Lake, Saskatchewan on November 16, 1924 to Maurice and Estelle (Fagnet) Assoignon, into a family of five sisters and three brothers. As a young boy he moved with his family to White Beech, Saskatchewan in 1934, during the drought years. Following his years of education, he devoted his time to working on the family farm. After farming on his own for several years, he parted with his farming operation and moved to Prince George in 1958. He worked in the British Columbia Lumber Industry at Willow River, hauling lumber to Giscomb, British Columbia.

After several years of working for Belamy Brother’s Sawmill he upgraded to a new job as Foreman with the Prince George Department of Highways, stationed at Aleza Lake, British Columbia which he enjoyed immensely. He retired from the British Columbia Department of Highways in 1988 and moved to Benito, Manitoba. It was during his retirement years at Benito that Ernest was able to reveal his gardening and ornamental skills. He was extremely proud of his flower growing abilities and the many public compliments.

Unfortunately, after many enjoyable years of retirement, attending to his hobbies looking after his yard, garden and flower beds, his health began to fail, culminating in a stroke in the summer of 2006. Not being able to care for himself, Ernest was required to sell his house and was relocated to the Duck Mountain Manor Care Home in August 2007. Following several hospitalizations over the next several years, Ernest was transferred to the Swan River Valley Personal Care Home on November 18, 2009, where he remained until his passing.

Ernest was predeceased by his mother Estelle, his father Maurice; brothers Gabrielle and Maurice Assoignon; sisters Elizabeth Matychuk, Mary Arno and Simone Kosolowsky; brothers in law John Matychuk, Bill Kosolowsky and Hector Matthews; and sister in law Sarah Assoignon.

Ernest is survived by his sisters Rose Matthews, and Nathalie (Paul) Olenick; brother Marcel (Verna) Assoignon; sister in law Annie Assoignon; brother in law Vern Arno as well as Ernest’s children Lyle, Denise, Tina and step daughter Louise.
