Helen Shadbolt
1933 – 2019
It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Shadbolt announces her passing at the Swan Valley Health Facilities at the age of 85 years.
Helen was born September 12, 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Charlie and Elsie Pearson. They moved to Conquest, Saskatchewan when Mom was eleven, and her younger sister, Lynne, was two weeks old. She attended school in Conquest, graduating in 1951. During her high school years, she helped cooking meals for her dad’s grain elevator construction crew during the summer. It was she met the love of her life and future husband, Frank (Bud) Shadbolt, who was working for her father. After graduation Mom worked for the Royal Bank, leaving there to marry Bud in February 1955, in the Conquest United Church. After brief stints in Saskatchewan and British Columbia they settled in Swan River, Manitoba, where they raised their five children.
Bud and Helen had a greenhouse business in Swan River which they ran for many years, keeping the whole family busy in Spring and Fall. Mom was a stay at home mom for many years and as the kids grew older, she went to work at the local hospital as a cook until her retirement in 1993. Mom was a very active member of the United Church Women (UCW) and was presented with a life membership. She was also a very active member of the local Hospital Auxiliary.
Helen, along with Bud, were very active bird watchers and enjoyed many outings and drives, dragging their kids and later grandchildren along with them. There were many stops to identify birds and wild flowers along the way. It was during these outings we all grew to appreciate and respect family and our environment.
In their later years they enjoyed travelling far and wide to see friends and family. She, along with Dad, was an active gardener and we enjoyed all the fresh produce. The yard blossomed with flowers under their care. Family was important and they were happiest surrounded by family.
Helen leaves to mourn her passing, sister Lynne (Don) McRae, children Michelle, Tammy, and Jaylene; daughter Elizabeth Peden, children Kathleen and Ryan; son Arne (Irene) Shadbolt, daughters Ashley and Amanda; daughter Lynne Frazer, daughters Carla, Abby, Cindy, Dawn, Shoshana; son Frank (Maggie) Shadbolt, children Pierce, Sydney, Brock; son Glenn (Doreen) Shadbolt.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Frank (Bud) in 2015; son in law Doug Frazer; and granddaughter Lucy van der Heide. Helen also leaves to mourn her passing numerous nieces and nephews; five great grandchildren; and sister in laws Florence Danard and Dorthy Akerley.
