Joseph Spence Obituary

Joseph Spence

1958 - 2018

We are very sad to announce the sudden passing of our dad, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, Joseph Marvin Douglas Spence. Joe was born in Swan River, Manitoba on November 4, 1958 to Abel and Theresa Spence. As a young man, he worked alongside his late father as a bush guide, as well as working with his parents tending to their livestock and in the garden.

Beginning his family in The Pas, Manitoba, Joseph began his career at Spruce Products (Tolko) as a lumber grader, retiring after thirty years. He spent time travelling and living in different parts of the country. Finally coming home, he spent his last five years driving for Cal’s Cab.

Dad loved fishing, motorcycling, bingo, hockey and playing cards. He enjoyed woodworking and creating his “beaver art”, usually with one of his dogs by his side, making plenty of people happy along the way. He loved listening to his music, April Wine, Hank Williams Junior and Johnny Cash. Mostly, he loved getting together with all of his children, family and friends, telling stories and giving advice.

Joe was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. While guiding us through life, he always made time for swimming at Clearwater Lake, camping anywhere we could and he never missed a chance to take us out for a ride on his Harley. He always made time for a visit wherever he passed by. Many saw him as a happy man, as he was, passing on while doing what he loves.

He was predeceased by his brothers Edward Spence, Larry Spence, Garry Spence; his parents Abel and Theresa Spence; his nephew Robert Timothy Ellis. He leaves to mourn his passing his five children; Jessica (Jeremy) Spence, Brittany Wilson, Manny (Brittany) Spence, Theresa (Sheldon) Shingoose, Billy Jo Spence; his sisters, Ida (Ronnie) Brass, Debbie (Richard) Huntinghawk, Marlene (George) Spence and brother Jerry Spence; fifteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers: Larry Boy Brass, Jerry Spence, Gary Brass, Waylon Brass, Evan Spence, Dion Shingoose, Elmer Spence and Rusty Cameron.

Joe will be greatly missed by all who knew him and those hearts that he has touched.
