Kate Lysack Obituary

Kate Lysack

1914 – 2018

Kate Lysack died at the Swan Valley Lodge on August 2, 2018 at the age of 104. She is survived by sisters, Anne Dumych and Lily (Garry) Johnston; brothers, Maxym, Victor (Elvira), Michael (Margaret), and Allan (Shirley); sister in law, Nettie; and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Dorothea Lysack; sisters, Olga Komenda and Sophie Ward; and by brother, Nick.

Kate was born on April 2, 1914 in the village of Dubini, Wolyn in western Ukraine. Her parents operated a farm on which they raised livestock and grew grain, fruit and vegetables. Kate had her early education in her village and attended middle school in a nearby town. When she was fifteen the family emigrated to Canada and she did not attend school in Canada.

In 1929 the family settled on a farm two miles south of Minitonas. The Great Depression started in the same year and it was hard to make a living, especially for the new arrivals to Canada. In 1930 Kate, at age sixteen, and her brother Nick, age seventeen, cleared several acres of forest by axe and saw to put the land into cultivation. Kate was strong and tough and did much work on the farm.

At age twenty-one Kate went to Winnipeg where she worked for one year. She did not like city life and returned to the farm where she lived and worked until 1959 when she relocated to her new home in Swan River to care for her aging parents until they died.

Throughout her long life, Kate greatly enjoyed gardening and every year tended a large garden, growing vegetables, fruit and flowers. She also enjoyed embroidery, reading and singing in church choirs. She enjoyed cooking and prepared countless meals for family, friends and visitors.

A life well-lived and a faithful servant to her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

The Lysack family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks to the Swan Valley Lodge nurses and staff for their compassionate care, as well as to the attending doctors.

A private family interment has already been held on August 4, 2018 in the Birchwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Swan River, Manitoba on August 29, 2018 at 11 am.
