Linda Wiebe Obituary

Linda Wiebe

1951 – 2019

On June 13, 2019, a bright spring afternoon, Linda Jane Wiebe of Wellman Lake, Manitoba, formerly of Carman, Manitoba, went to meet her loving Saviour at the age of 68 years.

Linda was born on March 26, 1951 to Bill and Agnes (Derksen) Giesbrecht in Carman where she grew up and received her education. It was there she met her future husband, Alvin Wiebe, and they were married September 25, 1971. They started farming in the Homewood District, quickly joined by three daughters: Robin (1972), Crystal (1973), and Charlotte (1974).

Together they ventured west in 1978 to farm at Belleview. Here Linda developed a huge market garden, becoming famous for her super sweet corn. They stayed eleven years making lifelong friends in both Belleview and Virden where they attended church. Many of the best family memories here involved a camper.

In 1989, the year of the fires, life took another sharp detour landing them at Wellman Lake. Here they settled for the next thirty years, becoming ‘the icons’ at Wellman Lake Lodge. Many friendships can trace their beginnings to the coffee pot here. She fed countless others from near and far at the restaurant, although she was very self-conscious about her skills. During slower seasons, she developed her artistic talents on the sewing machine and canvas, fed her love of music by playing the piano and joining Christmas choirs in the Valley. They watched an entire generation grow up at The Lake, some of them being involved in the extraordinary comfort care she received at the end of her life.

She is survived by her adoring husband Alvin, her partner in life of over forty-seven years; her three girls: Robin Wiebe (Swan River, Manitoba), Crystal Huhtala (Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Charlotte Church (Estevan, Saskatchewan); along with three grandsons: Justin and Connor Huhtala, and Levi Church (Taylor Schmidt); and one great-grandson: Hayden Church. Her grandsons and great grandson were the light of her life.

She is also survived by her mother, Agnes Giesbrecht of Winkler; two sisters: Laura (Erwin) Wiebe of Niverville, Lavina (Dennis) Krahn of Winkler; her mother and father-in-law: Walter and Eileen Wiebe of Carman; in-laws Milton (Donna) Wiebe of Winnipeg, Marlene (Heinz) Reimer of Winnipeg, Garth Wiebe of Winkler; along with eleven nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Gordon Wiebe in 1979, and her father Bill Giesbrecht in 2014.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. from Cornerstone Baptist Church in Minitonas, Manitoba with Pastor Byron Hardy officiating. A funeral service was held on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. from Friends Community Church in Carman, Manitoba.
