Thomas Ronald Peden

On December 27, 2017, Mr. Thomas R. Peden of Swan River, Manitoba passed away at the age of 70 years.

He is survived by his three children, Brent and Tia of Camrose, Alberta, Kathleen and Matt of Lacombe, Alberta, and Ryan of Swan River; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Hector and Agnes Peden; sister, Tanis Rutledge; and granddaughter, Lucy van der Heide.

Thomas was born on October 2, 1947 in Swan River to Hector and Agnes Peden. He attended four different schools in Swan River; Taylor School, Duncan School, the Scout hall, and finished high school at what is now the Ecole Swan River South School.

His first job was a baker, working at Sunrise Bakery. He had several other odd jobs before starting his trucking career at an early age. This career took him north over the ice roads, east and west across Canada. He had numerous stories from these travels including one of him driving through a shoot-out between the R.C.M.P. and a neighbouring community. He worked his way up from driver, to lead hand, to dock manager, then to terminal manager. Coming to his senses Tom finally gave up the long haul routes and ended the last half of his career delivering goods to local businesses around the valley. This experience made him well known to everyone in town and around the valley.

He married Irene Sukarukoff in 1971 and they had one son, Brent Peden. In 1985 he married Elizabeth Shadbolt and they have a daughter, Kathleen and son, Ryan.

Tom was an avid curler, outdoors man, hockey player and watcher, loved to dance, and an avid racing fan. He also had a varied taste in music. Tom was also an intense animal lover. He was a member of the Elks, Legion, and the Swan River Curling Club.

When his health began to decline, Tom still enjoyed talking about the hobbies he enjoyed, his grandchildren and on occasion his own brood, the good ones anyway.
