Violet Cecilia (Oggelsby) Sutherland

Violet Sutherland

1933 – 2018

Violet Cecelia Sutherland was born to Frederick Bertie and Harriet Francis Oggelsby on November 10, 1933 in Mannville, Alberta where her parents had a small farm.

She moved to Fort McLeod, Alberta with family in the early 1940s, completed school and pursued a nursing career, where she worked at a seniors’ lodge.  This is where she met Ken, a young RCMP officer and their life of love started. 

Vi and Ken married in 1957, moved to many different places in Alberta and had four children Brian, Linda, Bert and Jim.  In 1977, they moved to the farm outside of Bowsman Manitoba.

Vi helped Ken in the Birch River Shell office.  She enjoyed curling, camping, sewing, fishing and her garden.  Vi and Ken took wonderful trips - to Alberta and beyond – including a very memorable extended family trip to Sanibel Island, Florida.

Vi’s life was complete when she became a grandma.  She loved her grandkids and enjoyed each and every one, spending as much time with them as she could.  Later she became a grand-grandma.

Vi and Ken shared sixty-one happy years of marriage.  They taught their children well on the meaning of love, life and family. 

Violet is predeceased her parents, Bertram and Harriet Francies Oggelsby; brother, Don and Ollie Oggelsby; sisters, Iris and Dan Deboer and Rose and Al Chambers.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ken Sutherland; her four children, Brian and Simone Sutherland of Kenville, Manitoba, Linda and Len Bird of Swan River, Manitoba, Bert Sutherland and Nichole of Minitonas, Manitoba, Jim and Claudia Sutherland of Birch River, Manitoba; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; her brother, Ralph and Irene Oggelsby of West Bank, British Columbia.

Vi will be missed by many and always in her family’s hearts.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 10:00 am from the Bowsman Legion Hall, Bowsman, Manitoba with Rev. Kathy Highmoor officiating. Interment followed in the Bowsman Cemetery.
