Walter Oberlin

1930 - 2017

Walter John Oberlin, 87, beloved husband of Addy, of Swan River, Manitoba passed away peacefully on October 7, 2017 at the Swan River Valley Personal Care Home.

Walter was born March 30, 1930 in the home of his midwife grandmother in the Little Woody area. His parents were Roy and Ann (nee Urquhart). He also had two brothers, Pete and Ken.

Walter took over the family farm at the age of 20 in 1950 after his father passed away.

His first wife Lydia Picyk and Walter were married in November 1958 and had three children, Debra, Jacqueline (Arnie) and George (Tammy); and five grandchildren, Brittany, Nicholas, Braden, Kessa-Rose, and Mallory.

After Lydia’s passing in 1993 Walter married Alexandra deGraaf in November 1995. She brought to the marriage seven children, Gerry, Conny, Steve, Stewart, Mark, Jonathan and Cara; along with their spouses, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Walter worked many winter jobs to make extra money to keep the family going through the lean years.

Walter and Addy moved to Swan River in June 1998. George and his wife moved on to the farm. Father and son farmed together for several years.

Walter valued his family deeply and was dedicated to community service, rural council, Co-op, church and camps. His faith in God was the basis for everything he did.

We are grateful to the staff at the Rehab and the Personal Care Home for the excellent care they gave him.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Lydia; father, Roy; mother, Ann; and brother, Ken.

Walter will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He gave us a set of values we can use for the rest of our lives.
