Alex Strilaeff
1941 – 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alex Strilaeff on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 in Swan River, Manitoba. Alex resided in the Rural Municipality of Livingston, Saskatchewan, formerly of Thunderbird District, Saskatchewan. He passed away at the age of 78 years.
Continuing to celebrate his life and legacy are his two sons, Daryl Patrick of Benito, Manitoba, Sheldon James (Teresa); two grandchildren, Jayde Alex Edward, and Porter Mackal of Swan River, Manitoba; his sisters, Laura Veregin (Peter), Doris Staples (Derwyn), Mary Nichvolodov (Alex).
Alex was predeceased by his loving wife Doreen of 47 years; his parents John and Tina Strilaeff; and his infant sister Nancy Strilaeff.
Alex was born on May 3, 1941 at his parents’ homestead in the RM of Livingston. Alex went to Thunderbird School in Saskatchewan. Alex had many different jobs. He worked up at the sawmills around Porcupine Plains and White Beach. He also did some demolition work on elevators and helped many farmers with custom hauling.
Alex married the love of his life, Doreen Zarchikoff on February 1, 1969 in Pelly, Saskatchewan. Doreen and Alex resided in Thompson, Manitoba. The first few months of their marriage he worked at the Thompson mine, INCO. In 1970 they packed up and moved to their farm near Benito. This is where Alex found his love of farming and Doreen worked out of the house. Alex and Doreen were always kept busy running to hockey games, practices and volunteered a lot of their time at the Benito Recreation Complex. Alex and Doreen did a lot of curling and even when Doreen dropped out to pursue other interests Alex remained in the Benito curling club.
Alex lead a very active lifestyle. He was a RM Councillor for the RM of Livingston from 1995 – 2003. He loved to go ice fishing, hunting, and camping. One of his greatest loves were his boys. When his boys started playing hockey, he decided he would take up coaching the boys’ hockey teams. Doreen and Alex did a lot of camping and travelling and went several places like Deadwood, South Dakota and Reed Lake in Northern Manitoba. Doreen liked gardening and she passed her love of gardening onto Alex. In Alex’s later years after retirement he still loved to go fishing and camping with his family. He loved having family around and his grandchildren always made him smile. He was a very loving brother, husband, father and grandfather.
He will always be loved, never forgotten and greatly missed by all.
A graveside service was held on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Semenovka Cemetery, RM of Livingston, Saskatchewan.
