Alex was born in Dauphin and grew up and received his schooling in Rossburn. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba. Alex moved to Cowan in 1955 to teach at the Cowan Ridge School. On July 12, 1957 he married Elsie Hlady. Alex taught at the Renwer School in 1959 and moved to the Cowan West School in 1961. In 1966 Alex and his family moved to Swan River and he worked at the Swan Valley School Division for thirty-six years. While working for the school division he taught Science and Business Principles. In 1972 he became the Job Coordinator of the division, and in 1987 he became the Coordinator of the Cooperative Work Study Program. Throughout his teaching years, Alex spent many hours in the evening dedicated to establishing the Adult Education Program.

Alex enjoyed mixed curling, but his love for fishing eventually got in the way. He was also an avid hunter and loved camping because there was always the opportunity to cast a line. He loved carpentry work, and spent many hours building additions and renovating his and his children’s homes. He was always open to a good game of Crib.

Alex and his wife Elsie enjoyed travelling and they took many interesting trips that allowed them to spend quality time with their special friends.

Alex was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was an active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was also a Cadet Instructor with the Canadian Armed Forces for a number of years.

Private family prayers were held on Thursday, September 17, 2020. A private memorial service was held on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. from the Chapel of Swan Valley Funeral Services in Swan River with Father Warren Dungen officiating. Interment followed in the Birchwood Cemetery.
