Barbara Anne Reed
1934-2020
On September 4, 1934, Archdeacon George and Rose Phillips gave birth to their daughter Barbara Anne. She arrived unexpectedly during a family vacation, becoming the first girl ever to be born in Riding Mountain National Park. Though small of frame, Barb lived life large. She was beautiful, loyal, compassionate, sweet, and thoughtful, an amazing listener and encourager. Barbara oozed creativity, artistically and musically, seeing beauty in everything and everyone, passionately loving life, people, and Jesus. While in high school, she designed her school yearbooks and was given several awards for her unique artwork. When she was sixteen years old, one of her paintings was sent over to England and hung in a prestigious art gallery in London.
After high school she attended St. John’s College in Winnipeg. She was elected as Lady Stick, otherwise known as student body president. While attending college she met her one and only love, John Robert Reed. In 1957 she received her Bachelor of Arts and later that same year, on September 4, Barbara’s twenty-third birthday, Bob and Barbara were married in Winnipeg. Barb’s father, Archdeacon Phillips, performed the nuptials for his only daughter. Bob, an Anglican priest, pastored several churches over the years, and Barbara worked alongside Bob in ministry throughout their entire lives, serving in Treherne, Lynn Lake, Brandon, and Headingly, Manitoba, as well as Calgary and Okotoks, Alberta. Together they raised four children and later welcomed fifteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. Barbara and Bob spent one year in Kenya, Africa, fulfilling a lifelong dream of Barbara’s to do missionary work overseas. She was thrilled to be able to work with over 60 children, in an orphanage near Nairobi.
Barbara always saw the ‘glass half full’, and her positivity was contagious. She took delight in things that others would mindlessly pass over, such as dandelions, common weeds, and seeds. She left a permanent imprint on her family and friends, intentionally creating a legacy of faith within her family, as this was one of her greatest desires. Saturday morning, September 19, 2020, Jesus took her hand and whispered, "Barbara, it's time to come home." In the blink of an eye, Barbara took her first beautiful breath in heaven.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Rev. John Robert Reed, and her four children: Shannon Bauman (husband Vern), Barbara-Siu Jipp (husband David), Patrick Reed (fiancée Elizabeth Trondson), and Julie Carrigan (husband Chris), her fifteen grandchildren: Sarah Wohlgemuth (Matthew), Jordan Bauman (Kristen), April Bauman (Ralph), Landan Bauman (Alma), Joel Bauman (Simone), Chantelle Nelson (Donta), Genevieve Abad (Rio), Rory Jipp (Caralee), Joshua Jipp, Caleb Jipp, Rachael Swearingin (James), Reed Carrigan (Sidney), Eliza Carrigan, James Carrigan, Abigail Jones (Tim) and fourteen great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service was held on Sunday, October 11, 2020 from Living Word Ministries, with Pastor Ralf Boettcher officiating.
