Barry Donald Waito
1956 - 2026
On March 23, 2026, Barry passed away unexpectedly at the age of 69 years.
Survived by his loving wife: Connie, as well as three children: Josh (Rhonda), Justin (Sagan), Jess (Bruce), two grandchildren: Rebecca and Calem, three siblings: Jim (Peggy), Brenda (Greg), and Lyle, and sister-in-law: Sheree (Tom); predeceased by his parents: Loretta and Donald.
An avid woodworker and craftsman, Barry had a deep passion for nature and forest stewardship. He was active in the Boy Scouts and his philanthropic efforts were renowned, if you wanted anything to get done, you talked to Barry! He loved the outdoors and gardening, as well as kayaking, hiking, canoeing, camping… and tabletop drum solos (if you know, you know!).
His talent for cooking excellent meals and making campfires lives on in his three children, as does a strong stubborn streak! He was steadfast in his moral code and beliefs and could always be counted on to share his opinions and advice. An active member in every community he joined, Barry was well-known and well-loved for his support, encouragement, and insights toward others.
Barry was a jack of all trades and true outdoorsman, capable of completing any task he put his mind to. He was a highly strategic thinker and planner; a born leader with a presence felt in every room he walked into.
A champion of systemic change, Barry fought against broken systems. Even when his brain injury prevented him from continuing his action-oriented lifestyle, he still carried with him an incredible strength of character and drive and was a constant help for others dealing with their own brain injuries. His family and good friend Mike McKernan will continue his hard-fought struggle for brain injury justice with MPI.
In recent years, Barry could often be found sitting in his favourite chair with his loving cat, Ceiligh, sleeping on his chest.
We lost a pillar of our family this week, and said goodbye to an amazing, brilliant man who we will miss incredibly. He was the best husband, dad/father-in-law, and grandfather, and his family’s #1 supporter. We shared so many good talks and adventures. He was always there with any advice he could offer…and was a huge fan of everything we did. It will be so hard to move on without him.
Rest easy, Barry. We love you more than words can say. You will be missed by many. Every single Day.
If friends so desire, memorial donations in memory of Barry may be made to Manitoba Brain Injury Association 825 Sherbrook Street #204 Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5.
