Daniel Dahl Obituary

Dan Dahl was born on March 16, 1929, to Issac and Sarah (Peters) Dahl.  The Dahl family had immigrated from a Mennonite settlement of Nicolaipol Russia in 1923 due to the turmoil of the Soviet Union and the persecution of their Mennonite heritage.

Dan was born in the now vanished village of Turn Hill SK (NE of Swift Current) and was the fourth of eight children. Farm life and the Saskatchewan prairies instilled a love of the outdoors, the values of hard work and the love for cows and horses which he displayed thru out his life. A strong Christian heritage was also a large part of life and in the fall of 1946, he attended Herbert Bible Institute for 5 months. Then Dan and brother John moved to Swan River to take up carpentry and eventually farming. Illness forced Dan to leave the farming to John and move on to working at TipTop Tailors. This is where he learned the art of the clothing business. After a few years he moved to the SV Co-op where he happily served as dry goods manager for 30 years.

Somewhere in this time period he met and fell in love with a vivacious young lady, Leona Welke, thru the youth group. They were married April 21, 1954. In Aug 1956 Barry was born and Cheryl soon joined the family Nov 1957.

Somewhere in the mid 60’s we bought a boat which set the focus for our family. We fished...a lot. Then we built a cabin at Wellman Lake, and it became our 2nd home. Between the fishing, swimming, water skiing, hiking, snowmobiling and many guests we had a full life.

Dan served God at Temple Baptist Church and in the community in many ways but notably he was choir member for 64 years, on church board, Sunday school teacher and generally involved. He had a wonderful baritone voice and used it well. Dad served on the board for Valley Workshop, delivered Meals On Wheels and was a faithful Gideon.

Dan retired in 1990 and eventually became a partner with Frank Dvorak as an outfitter, then a hunting guide for Gary Nemechek. They always had stories to share, and I think that as hunting stories go they grew with the telling. Dan also helped out with harvest for Archie and Betty Nickle. All of these friendships were deeply valued.

Dan is predeceased by his loving wife Leona of 64 years and 6 brothers and sisters as well as their spouses.

Dan is survived by son Barry and daughter Cheryl of SR, Sister Nettie of Saskatoon and many nieces and nephews. Cheryl’s Stepson Tanner (Shonna Hildebrand) Duncalfe with children Rayna and Koa of WPG. Stepdaughter Denise (Jeremy) Bouw with children Sophia and Levon of Red Deer ALT.

Our deepest gratitude to all staff at the Swan Valley Lodge who cared for dad with such care. The work that you do is monumental! Thank You!
