Donald Schure Obituary

On July 6, 2021, Don Schure of Benito, formerly of Durban, passed away at the age of 94 years.  Don was born in Swan Plain, SK to the late John and Pauline Szczur (Schure).  He attended school in Swan Plain SK.  At the age of 18, his family bought land at Durban and with the Ford 8N tractor, and a hay rack, they packed all their belongings and moved to their new home (almost lost the load on the Norquay Hill).  Don worked cutting wood in Ontario during the winter and would come home to farm with his parents in the summer. This went on for a few years. When home, Don attended many dances in the area, Pretoria Hall (just around the corner), Whitebeech, Arran, Vesna and Bearhead School, sometimes he even had to drive the tractor to get there.

When home one summer, Don met a nice young waitress (Anne Kosolowsky) at the local Koroluks Bakery & Café. Together they attended many dances and weddings and danced the night away. Don and Anne married in 1956 at the Durban Ukrainian Orthodox Church. They had 3 sons; Terry, Garry, & Allan and one daughter, Debby. They were very involved with the church and attended on a regular basis in Durban and the various surrounding country churches, attending “Prazniks”. When Durban Orthodox Church closed they joined the Swan River Ukrainian Orthodox Church where Don was the President for a few years and they are still members.

Don was a farmer thru and thru. He farmed with his father, brothers and went on to farm with his sons and always made them aware of his opinion. Livestock played an important role in his farming career and a weekly trip to the local auction mart was a must. Over the years Don witnessed the many changes in farming from the early days of pitching sheaves and thrashing machines to the present day of self- driving automated equipment. Don never retired, he became the “gofor” parts & supplies, “taxi” to shuttle the men or equipment from field to field and “field inspector” twice a day, which kept him involved in the farming operation as long as he was able to drive.  Along with farming, Don was a school van driver in his early years.

In 1995, they moved from Durban to their newly built home in Benito. He was a member of the Benito Elks and The Benito Senior Centre and he loved to play pool there.  He also enjoyed going for coffee at the coffee shop, camping, fishing and curling. He loved to get together with friends to play cards, especially with the Pretoria Corner crew and the evening always ended with a “light snack”. He also loved taking the Grandkids fishing and stopping to catch frogs along the way.  Don always had MOJOs in his pocket for the kids and was devastated when they quit making them, as were the kids. Ukrainian Christmas was a favorite time of year with the carolers and family, he loved to have his family all together “Diborja” (Good Luck!).

Don is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Anne, four children; Terry  (Shelley) of Benito, Garry (Karen) of Benito, Debby Bouwman (Wayne) of Winnipeg,  Allan (Charlene) of Benito, 11 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Also left to mourn his loss is his brother Ernie of Hazelridge, 4 sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

Don was predeceased by his parents John and Pauline, also siblings Peter, Mary Duncan, Bill, Nestor, Harriet Veito and Eugene.

Pallbearers were McKenzie Schure, Kyle Schure, Jamie Mykula, Devin Reinhardt, Deven Bailey and Wayne Bouwman. Honorary Pallbearer is his brother, Ernie Schure
