Doris McCullough Obituary

With broken hearts we announce that Doris McCullough of Benito Manitoba passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Swan Valley Hospital, Swan River Manitoba on Thursday March 30, 2023, at the age of 95 years.

Doris was born on February 5, 1928, to John and Charlotte Phillips in West Ham, England.  She met her soon to be husband Cecil in April of 1945 and they were married shortly after in September of the same year at the age of 17. Cecil returned to Canada in January 1946 and Doris followed as an English war bride in June of 1946.  She had to work very hard to overcome all the changes from city life to that of life on the farm with none of the comforts she was accustomed to at home. Cecil had built a house in the Pretoria District, and they raised a family of three sons and three daughters.

Mom raised six children and always had a huge garden which she loved. In her younger years she enjoyed knitting baby clothes for all her grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes included doing jigsaw puzzles, crossword books and was an avid reader up until her final days.  Her favorite sport was baseball, and she watched her Toronto Blue Jays faithfully. Her biggest joy in life was her handicapped daughter Lois and even in her final days, during her worst moments, a picture of Lois would bring the biggest smile and a tear to her eye, and she would say “I loved her so much”.

Up until the very end she remained very active and continued to walk herself downtown for everything she needed.  She never wanted anyone to bother over her and maintained her independence while visiting and telling jokes wherever she went. Although she was not one to go out to social events, she was always willing to share a strong cup of tea with friends and neighbors.

She was not a church goer but was a strong believer in the Lord and said he always watched over her and showed her the way forward.

Although our Mom is gone in body, she will never be forgotten.  She is now at peace and has joined her husband and cherished daughter Lois.

Doris is predeceased by her husband Cecil, daughter Lois and great grandson Cameron Coulthart.

Doris leaves to mourn her passing Patricia (Victor) of Regina, SK: Brian (Linda) of Durban MB: David (Helen) of Durban MB: James (Brenda) of Durban MB: Maureen (Les) of Benito MB.

13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
