Doris Anna Shlachetka was peacefully called home by our Lord on the morning of February 21st, 2025.
Mom was born in The Pas, Manitoba on March 21st, 1932, to Alfred and Eliza Fenner (Quill). She grew up next to the lake with her parents and 9 siblings in the northern community of Cormorant, Manitoba.
A familiar childhood story she told many times over was how much she enjoyed sneaking into one of her Father’s gardens and choosing to eat the juicy ripe tomatoes over the strawberries.
Mom worked most of her life starting at the age of 13 until her retirement in 1995. Her first job, at $10/month, was to get up at 5:30am, trek through the cold darkness with a lantern in hand and make a fire that heated up the one room school in time for class.
Her next job was working for the local fur trading post in Cormorant. This is where she worked with and eventually married Alex Shlachetka (“Pa”) who was originally from the Whitesand Saskatchewan area. They were united in marriage on June 16, 1950, and raised 9 children - Beverly, Fred, Brian, Morley, Raymond, Glenn, Billy, Dean and Cathy. They also fostered children along the way. They were married 50 years until Pa’s passing in 2000 at the age of 92.
They purchased the trading post in the 60’s and ran it for about 20 years until they sold it and moved across town settling into the area Mom was raised. Their remaining work years were spent driving taxis to and from The Pas. She also took odd jobs such as a Water Treatment Plant Operator for the Town and a Community Health Worker at the clinic.
When not driving taxi, you could find Mom and Pa tending to their garden together. She also enjoyed hunting, boating, picking berries, and even laying a blanket down under the poplar trees on a beautiful summer day next to the lake to take nap.
Despite her workload, she always made time to tend to St. Luke’s Anglican Church. As a vestry member, she was instrumental in making sure the church continued by raising money knitting, baking, sewing quilts and organizing rummage sales.
Her final years were living in Swan River, along with grandson William, to be closer to her daughter Cathy. In 2000 she suffered a stroke and has been residing in the Swan Valley PCH where she peacefully passed.
Doris is survived by her 2 daughters, Beverly and Cathy: 5 sons, Brian (Winnie), Raymond (Darlene), Glenn (Sibylle), Bill and Dean, daughters-in-law, Corrine Shlachetka and Anna Leach and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
