In Loving Memory of Edward Gorchynski
February 3, 1935 – August 20, 2025
With deep sorrow and profound gratitude for a well-lived life, we announce the passing of Edward Gorchynski of Swan River, Manitoba, who left this world peacefully on August 20, 2025, at the age of 90.
Born in Hamton, Saskatchewan, Edward was the second youngest of six children to Nicholas and Emelia (Minnie) Gorchynski. Raised on the family farm, Edward’s early years were shaped by hard work, close-knit community, and a thirst for learning that would define his life’s journey.
Edward’s passion for education began early—at just 17, he took on his first teaching role in Shellmouth. From that humble beginning, he built a distinguished career spanning five decades, impacting lives in Russell, Dauphin and Swan River Valley. Many of those years were spent as the Principal of Benito before retiring in Swan River. Edward’s love for teaching never waned, as he then was a dedicated substitute teacher well into retirement. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Manitoba in 1973 via correspondence and summer classes, a testament to his commitment for lifelong learning.
It was in Benito where Edward met the love of his life, Ida, a moment that would shape the rest of his days. Together, they built a warm and loving family and became deeply rooted in the community.
Beyond the classroom, Edward was a pillar of his community. He served as Councilor and Mayor of Benito, published and edited the Benito Standard, and held leadership roles in the Swan Valley Teachers Association, Benito Chamber of Commerce and Recreational Board, along with serving as board Chairman of Swan River St. Andrews United Church. His dedication extended to youth sports, coaching baseball, volunteering with Minor Hockey, and later, to spiritual service as a committee member with the Northland Presbytery of the United Church of Canada.
Edward’s legacy is lovingly carried on by his devoted wife, Ida, and their four children: Gregory (Gail) Gorchynski of Winnipeg, Angela (Merlin) Bartel of Benito, Jeffrey (Nerissa) Gorchynski of Swan River, and Trevor (Wendy) Gorchynski of Calgary. He was a proud grandfather to Tyler, Kenton, Megan, Dean, Grayson, Euan, Kai, and Lawson, and great-grandfather to Haven, Myah, Gemma, Tanner, Alika, Makenzie, Rio, Kalli, and Jada.
He is also survived by his sister Elizabeth Adam of Yorkton; sisters-in-law Betty Cayer of Winnipeg and Josie Gorchynski of Yorkton; with many cherished nieces and nephews. Edward was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Minnie, brothers Joseph and John, and sisters Theresa and Adela.
Edward found joy in every aspect of life. Especially traveling, whether to visit family, exploring new places, or taking a drive to the lake or around the Valley to look at fields. He loved hosting gatherings filled with good food and lively games. Card games were a passion, always keeping score in his head with a sharpness that amazed his children. Nothing brought him more delight than helping a grandchild with schoolwork, his eyes lighting up with pride and patience.
He will be remembered for his love for family, unwavering dedication to education, tireless service to community, and the quiet strength and wisdom he shared with all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, his students, and the many lives he Impacted.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Swan Valley Hospital for their exceptional care, compassion, and support during Edward’s final days.
Edward walked gently through life, leaving footprints of compassion and grace. We are better for having known him.
