Ed was born on April 5, 1933, in a log house on a farm in the Floradale District. In 1938, the family moved to the town of Minitonas where he attended school. In 1950, at the age of 17, Ed went to work at the Pioneer Gold Mine in B.C. He was hired as a laborer in the spring of 1951 by the Searle Grain Co. in Minitonas and later became manager. He took up farming with his father, Carl, working one quarter of land in the Floradale District. At about this time, Ed met a pretty young gal, Myrtle. They were married on July 25,1956 at the First Baptist Church in Minitonas. Ed became the Postmaster in his hometown on August 1, 1966. He took great pride in his job, which gave him many opportunities to converse with people in the community. Ed was employed by Canada Post for 39 years and retired June 2002.
Ed spoke fondly of his years serving Minitonas, first as Town Councillor for 8 years and then as Mayor for 25 years. He also served 33 years on the Swan Valley School Division Board as Trustee and Chairman. This provided opportunities to serve with the Manitoba Association of School Trustees and the Canadian School Board Association.
As a young boy, Ed accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and followed Him in Baptism. Ed was involved in the Church Youth Group, Home Builders Group, and Church Board. However, the most gratifying experience for him was serving as Church Choir Director. Ed was a member of the Hart Quartet with his brother Joe, brother-in-law Art, and his uncle, Reuben.
Ed and Myrtle enjoyed their travels to Mexico, Hawaii, and several regions in the USA. They also explored parts of the Canadian east and west coasts.
The family would like to express thanks to Dr. Izadi of the Swan Valley Primary Care Centre and the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Peritoneal Dialysis Unit for their compassionate care for Ed.
