Eldon Bartel Obituary

Eldon Bartel
1934 - 2023

Eldon Henry Bartel was born January 13, 1934, to Ben and Agnes Penner Bartel in Giroux, Manitoba. He peacefully passed away at Maplewood Manor, Steinbach, Manitoba on March 20, 2023, at the age of eighty-nine years.

Dad grew up in Greenland, Manitoba, and enjoyed a happy childhood in a family of ten children. He learned to drive at a young age and sometimes delivered milk to the local cheese factory. Memories of the good old days were always a highlight at family get togethers. As a youth, Dad gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite. The faith was very precious to him to the end.

He found his life’s companion in Paulina Miller, and they were married on May 10, 1957, in Rosenort, Manitoba. They enjoyed sixty-five wonderful years together and their home was blessed with two sons and three daughters. Dad taught us the values of courage and hope. He was ready with advice when needed and believed in giving others the benefit of the doubt. Singing and devotions were important to him.

Their first years were spent in Greenland, Manitoba where dad did drywall installation and finishing. They also raised chickens and did a little grain farming. 1968 found them pulling up their roots and joining a small group of families moving to the Swan River Valley where grain farming became their main occupation. Dad had a heart for the mission outreach, and they served in various countries. Their many years spent in Haiti were a highlight leaving them with lifelong friendships.

Throughout his lifetime dad enjoyed working with wood. When he retired from farming, he put his talent to use building many fine pieces of furniture. This included tables, chairs, and china cabinets. Many of his children and grandchildren were recipients of gifts ranging from a wooden tractor to a bedroom suite.

In 2017, due to his declining health Dad and Mom moved to Steinbach. Together they faced his Parkinson’s diagnosis with courage and resolve. Their last fifteen months together were spent at Maplewood Manor where he received excellent care for which we as a family are very grateful.

Those left to cherish fond memories are his loving wife Paulina, children: Veronica and Myron Penner, Swan River MB, James and Ruth, Benito MB, Cindy and Darcy Isaac, Cromer MB,
Merlin and Angela, Benito MB, Liz and Sheldon Wohlgemuth, Ste. Anne MB, twenty grandchildren and forty-one great grandchildren. His siblings: Jake Bartell, Fred and Gladys Bartel, Margaret and Melvin Warkentin, Adeline and Dewayne Warkentin, Larry and Connie Bartel, sisters- in- law Louise Bartel and Vivian Bartel. His In laws: Elsie and Johnny Dueck, Libby Miller, Adella Thiessen, Delores Miller, Walter and Phyllis Miller, Norma Isaac, Otto and Rachel Miller.

He was predeceased by his parents, parents-in-law, one son-in-law, three brothers, one sister, seven brothers-in-law and six sisters-in-law.
