It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Husband and Father, Eugene Kluke at the age of 86, on November 26, 2023, at the Swan Valley Heath Centre.
Eugene was born to Fredrick and Anne (Hubic) on the original family farm of Eelya and Paraskevia Kluk, in the RM of St. Phillips, on November 22, 1937. He was the younger brother of Alex and older sibling to his sister Phyllis.
Fred and Anne purchased their property in the RM of Swan River and moved their family there, where Eugene continued to reside until 2021. Eugene attended Benito School until Grade 8. His responsibilities at home increased with age as farm work never ends. There were always animals to be fed, wood to be cut and split, and land to be worked. Eugene fell in love with farming and that became his passion throughout his life. He also worked in a sawmill for John Sas and hauled pulp wood for Bev Abigail. He worked at A & J Meats from 1982 – 1990. Eugene managed the Benito Stock Yards with Bill Polowski, Alex Kurylowich, and Eugene Kurylowich. When the stock yards moved to Swan River, he worked alongside his brother Alex. Later in life, Dad was a councilor in Ward 1 for the RM of Swan River.
Eugene found the love of his life Kathleen Rody and during their romance had their first-born daughter, Kyla Jean on November 15, 1979. The couple were married on August 21, 1982. Their family grew with the addition of Kathleen’s sons, Kelly, Lee, Shannon and Shane. Eugene’s family was completed when his second daughter, Rubieann Marie was born on March 5, 1983.
Eugene was an avid hunter which always included good laughs, good drinks, and many hours of great hunting stories. He enjoyed curling and attending all the local bonspiels he could participate in. Eugene also enjoyed playing many card games with family and friends. Later in life he spent many hours at the coffee shop always waiting to hear the next round of gossip. Eugene and Kathleen found joy in following their daughters to Ukrainian Dance Competitions and would personally adjudicate their performance.
Eugene farmed for over 60 years and after suffering his heart attack in 2021, he and Kathy moved to the Thunderhill Courts in Benito. With his declining health this move was necessary to ensure he could reside with Kathy and their cat Tracy. He will be missed by all who loved him.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen, daughter Kyla (Darrell), daughter Rubieann (Ken), stepsons Kelly Dayson (Mariana), Shannon Dayson (Veronica), Shane Dayson (Tanya), daughter in law Del Dayson. Grandchildren David Dayson, Alexa Peterson, Kieran Dayson, Mia Dayson and 2 great grandchildren. His brother Alex Kluke, sister Phyllis (Ed) Soroka, nephew Rob Soroka, Aunt Rose (John) Sas are also left to mourn his memory.
He is predeceased by his parents Fredrick and Anne Kluke, his in-laws William and Ruby Rody, stepson Lee Dayson, and niece Joanne Soroka.
A celebration of life was held from the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Parish Hall, Benito, MB on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
