Mum entered this world on April 9, 1921, in the district of Thunderhill, the second child and eldest daughter of Frank and Theresa Shadbolt (nee Currie). She began her education at the old Thunderhill School and transferred to Duncan School in Swan River after her parents moved to town and opened the greenhouse and market garden. She excelled at math and after graduation in 1939, she was recruited to work for the Ministry of Defence in Ottawa during WWII.
After the war, she returned home and took a position at the Swan Valley Co-op as a bookkeeper. It is here she met her husband; Beatty Danard and the couple were married on February 11, 1952. They welcomed three daughters, Janice in 1953, followed by Dolores in 1956 and Corinne in 1964. And although she left her job at the co-op to raise her family, she continued to work at the greenhouse each spring until it closed in 1979.
Mum’s passion was flowers, you could never have too many! She was especially fond of lilies and wildflowers. She was an avid reader, from the daily newspapers, magazines, to lengthy historical novels. Never far from her spot on the couch was her crochet hook and her knitting needles. Intricate doilies adorned her furniture and once her nieces and nephews started families, she crafted beautiful baby blankets. But mostly, she absolutely loved being a grandma to Spencer and a great grandma to Cambel and Callan.
She was a quiet, gentle and intelligent woman who will be greatly missed. We love you Mum, give Dad a hug for us.
A short service and internment will take place 11 a.m. on Friday, October 18, at the Birchwood Cemetery, Swan River, MB.
