Hazel Zell

1927 - 2020

The family of Hazel Zell sadly announce her passing on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 93.

Hazel was born June 27, 1927 in Swan Plain, Saskatchewan.  Her parents were Mike and Mary Shkraba.  She was the youngest of ten children. 

On a visit to Swan River in 1943, she met her future husband Loren and they were married February 5, 1944.  They were blessed with four children, Robert, Bruce, Lorraine, and Peggy.

While running a household and raising her children, Hazel worked outside of the home.  Her experience took her to cleaning houses, the restaurant business, working as a dishwasher, and a short order cook in various restaurants in Swan River, Manitoba.  In 1972 she started work at the Swan Valley Hospital as a dietary cook, retiring in 1983 to spend time with Loren.  They spent the next few years fishing and camping.  Hazel was a hard-working person who cared for her family.  Hazel spent her time with things that fulfilled her pleasures, gardening, crocheting, bingo, and bowling.  She spent many hours watching sports on TV, curling, hockey, and football.  She had been an active member of the Swan Valley Seniors Centre.

She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her children, Bruce Zell of Winnipeg, Peggy Ray (Jim) of Winnipeg, daughter-in-law Margaret Zell of Swan River; grandchildren, Brian (Nicole) Zell, Brenda (Shane) Holinaty, Christina Zell, Alison Zell, Tina (Frank) Dukaric, and Christopher Ray; great grandchildren, Karlee, Darek, Katie Zell, Dax and Isla Holinaty, Benjamin Montsion, Alex Dukaric; great great grandson Luca Zell. 

Hazel was predeceased by her infant grandson Derek (1971), husband Loren (1988), daughter Lorraine (1997) and son Robert (2006).

If friends so desire, donations in Hazel’s memory may be made to the Swan River Valley Health Auxiliary (Memorial Fund), Box 1450, Swan River, Manitoba R0L 1Z0.

Due to Covid restrictions, a private graveside service was held with Pastor Wayne Church officiating.

A celebration of life service will take place at a later date.
