John “Jack” Edwin Mitchelson
1935 - 2024
John Edwin Mitchelson passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024, at the age of 88, with family at his side. Jack was born on September 11, 1935, on the home place SW 11-36-28w. He attended Swan Valley school, district #1038 for 8 years and one year of high school in Swan River. He had 3 sisters, Leone, Shirley, and Nancy.
Jack married Margaret Eggie of Big Woody on October 15, 1965, in the United Church in Swan River. They were married for 58 ½ years. Jack and Marg raised 3 sons, Brett, Tyler, and Reece, all of whom went on to university after high school.
He was a talented man who cattle and grain farmed as well as worked in the carpenter shop for 23 years in Swan River. After he retired, he made countless number of stairs for customers from his shop at home. The expression “Jack of all trades” fits him to a tee. He did Mechanical work, farming, carpenter work, and various metal fabrications.
He lived on this quarter of land SW 11-36-28 most of his life except for a few months when he worked at Lynn Lake, London ON and New Westminster, BC. After retirement, he drove combine for his brothers-in-law until he was 80. Jack was a kind, honest, generous, and hard-working man who didn’t say a lot but listened well. He always said his sisters did all the talking.
Some pursuits he enjoyed were fishing at Snow Lake, square dancing with Marg as well as golfing. He actually got a “hole in one” on #6. Over the years, many if not all members of the family received a piece of furniture made with his loving hands. He volunteered on the United Church Board, cleaned the church, and built the office desks etc. Jack and Marg gardened together until his last year when he was no longer able to do so. Jack was an avid reader, especially about the history of the Valley. He had a knack for remembering names and years right up until his passing.
Jack is survived by his loving wife Margaret, 3 sons and 7 grandchildren Brett (Anne) of Austin Texas, (Chase and Aidan); Tyler (Lynn) of Oakville ON, (Trajan, Talon); Reece (Angela) of Hinton AB, (Roen, Garon, Briar).
