John (Jack) Thompson Obituary

John (Jack) Thompson

1939 - 2020

In the early morning of September 17, 2020, John Allen (Jack) Thompson passed away at his home in the arms of his loving wife and surrounded by their children.

Jack was born June 6, 1939 in Birch River, Manitoba, the tenth child of Durward and Hilda Thompson.  He received his classroom education at McKinley School.  On May 15, 1959 Jack married Sylvia Fayant.

As a young man Jack worked as a mechanic at a garage in Birch River.  At a young age he had a love for clearing bush and became a self-taught dozer operator.  He worked clearing bush and building the road to Steeprock Lake and beyond.  In years to follow he used that very road as he spent many years in the logging industry in the Porcupine Mountain.  Jack owned and operated logging trucks and equipment.  He was the manager at Prendiville Wood Preservers at Birch River.  Other jobs included work at Jenpeg, Manitoba, developing the Ominawin Channel, and driving school bus for Swan Valley School Division.  Throughout his life Jack grain and cattle farmed at Birch River where he and Sylvia raised their six children.  Jack was a proud hard-working farmer and farming was his life.  He was so pleased and proud to see his son and grandsons begin to farm as well.

Jack was a quiet, calm and gentle man. He was a steady, loving husband; a strong and patient father; a proud grandpa and great grandpa who had a special connection with his grandchildren, and each of his grandchildren put a fond smile on his face. He was also a reliable, respected, true friend to many.

Jack was a workingman and got joy from a good day’s work.

He enjoyed fishing, when the fishing was good, camping with his family and auction sales with his good friends and all his boys.

His passing leaves his wife of sixty-one years Sylvia; daughters: Lois (Jerry) Mosiondz, Ruth (Gerry) Stevenson, Joan (Darryl) Mosiondz, Luella (Jeff) Hohne, Della (Darin) McKay; son John Thompson (Torey); grandchildren:  Tammy, Kristin, Bernel, Janel, Nathan, Desirae, Brooke, Chet, Nicolas, Alaynah, Robby, Riley, Jenna, Tucker, Payton; great grandchildren:  Rylee, Beckam, Brayden, Tyler, Emma, Layne, Jack, Beau; sister:  Muriel (Dennis) Evans, brother:  Don Thompson; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Thompson, Sylvia Thompson, Rose Thompson; along with a community of farmers, friends and neighbours who are all feeling a loss.

All broken hearted and grateful for the man he was.

Due to Covid restrictions a family service was held September 23, 2020 and Jack was laid to rest at Crandall Cemetery, Birch River, Manitoba.

If friends so desire, donations in Jack’s memory may be made to Parkinson Canada or to CancerCare Manitoba.
