Peacefully on Saturday January 29, 2022, at 9:45 am Joseph Lucien Carriere passed away with his
loving and devoted wife by his side.
He leaves to mourn his wife Shirley of 55 years, daughter Gail (Rick) Randell, son Gerald (Natalie)
Carriere, grandchildren Joey, Dustin, Kelsey, Amber, and one great grandchild Clara (Kristen Woytkiw) and a huge extended family, including his mother in law Irene Funk.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ephrem and Irma, sisters Claire Vachon, Estelle Omond, and
Rachael Carriere.
Joe was one of 15 children, born to Ephrem and Irma Carriere on December 22, 1946, in Roblin,
MB. He is survived by his siblings Denise (Willie) Sawchuk, Margaret (Henry) Laliberte, Diane
Carriere, Sue (Al) Fraser, Claudette (Bruce) Holm, Emile Carriere, Pat (Barb) Carriere, Monique
(Don) MacDonald, Donalda (Jim) Potvin, Adrienne Carriere, and baby sister Janet Carriere.
Joe attended school at Walker School in San Clara, then Roblin High school until he was about 14
then he started his working career logging, then moved to Winnipeg to work with family
cleaning taxis and limos. After a while, he moved back to San Clara to work in the family general
store. At this point, he met the love of his life Shirley by asking her to a party at Gabe
Larocque's. Later, Shirley decided to move to Winnipeg, and Joe followed to be with her.
While in Winnipeg, Joe had several jobs, working in the construction field.
In April of 1966, Joe and Shirley married in San Clara, MB, then went back to Winnipeg and had
their first baby, Gail Marie.
In 1967, they moved to Thompson MB, where Joe went to work for Wescore Drilling
underground with his father in law Delmer Funk, he was known to many as Smokin' Joe for
burning drill bits. He also worked part time as a taxi driver, and a bouncer at the Thompson Inn.
In 1970, Shirley and Joe welcomed a new addition, a little boy, Gerald Joseph (Meat).
In 79-80 Joe decided to change it up a little and went to surface drilling for Midwest/Major
Drilling.
In 1990, Joe and Shirley packed up and moved to Bowsman MB to be closer to their aging
parents, while Joe continued to work away from home until 2006 when he was forced to retire
due to having lung cancer. At this time, they packed once again and moved into Swan River MB.
Once he was up to it, he went to work for Sauder Trucking doing the one thing he loved,
maintaining semis. He loved anything with an engine, from old antique cars and trucks, tractors,
lawn mowers, even old washing machines, but nothing compared to his love of half ton trucks,
of which he had plenty of.
Joe could always be seen outdoors, his love of the north will always be his favorite. It didn't
matter what he was doing, from cutting wood, hunting, quading, snowmobiling, spear fishing,
picking berries and puckons, but his absolute favourite spot was camping, boating, and fishing at
Iskwasum Lake. Friends would gather there, and he loved the times when the guitars and fiddle
would magically appear and they would play, sing and just enjoy the laid-back lifestyle into the
night. Joe's love of the Metis festivals in the summer and fall were also a huge favorite, he
loved the summer circut, traveling around to several of them, enjoying time with family and
friends.
His grandchildren and great grandchild were his shining stars, he would spend as much time as
he could teaching them to do all the things he loved to do. He was proud of each and every one
of them.
In one way or another, Joe touched the lives of many people, and has left a lasting memory on
so many. He will be missed. See you in "Hillbilly Heaven"
