Karen Margrethe Gordon (née Immerkar)
June 26, 1934 to Nov.16, 2025
Karen Margrethe Gordon (née Immerkar) passed away peacefully on Nov.16, 2025, in Roblin, at the age of 91.
Born on June 26, 1934, in Swan River, she was the daughter of Danish immigrants Christian and Emmy Immerkar. Karen grew up on the family farm in the Egremont District. She was a keen
4-H member, winning the Gold Watch Award and attending 4-H camp at Clear Lake. She began her working life at 16, renting a room in town and working at Eli Cox Dry Goods.
On June 15, 1956, Karen married Ronald "Frank" Gordon, and they settled on the Gordon family farm south of Swan River in the Shaw District. Together they welcomed three children: Robert, Bernice, and James.
A woman of incredible talent and tireless dedication, Karen was a gifted seamstress and tailor, teaching sewing and creating countless quilts, cross-stitch, and hardanger projects. She was also an avid gardener, maintaining large vegetable and flower gardens. Karen was deeply committed to her community, holding positions on the Kenville United Church Board and teaching Sunday School, serving on the Lidstone WI, and being a long-time member and exhibitor of the Swan River Valley Agricultural Society.
After Frank’s unexpected passing in 1986, Karen continued to run the farm with the help of her son Robert. She moved to town in 1992, remaining active with her busy seamstress business, community interests, and new friendships, often spending her time garage-saleing or on puzzles of all shapes and sizes. She continued many of her hobbies, including gardening and sewing, right up until her last days at home.
Karen was predeceased by her parents, Christian and Emmy Immerkar; her husband, Frank; and her siblings (and spouses): Martha (Carl) Olefson, Mary (Jack) Muir, Hans Immerkar, and Ejnar Immerkar. She was also predeceased by Frank’s siblings (and spouses): Bruce (Edna) Gordon, George (Helga) Gordon, Agnes (Earl) Stevenson, Mary (Lawrence) Sigurdson, and Jack Gordon.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law Colleen Immerkar, Evelyn Immerkar, and Linda Gordon; her children: Robert (Carolyn) of Swan River, Bernice of Swan River, and James of Winnipeg; her grandchildren: Danielle Gordon-Broome (Derek Broome), Nicholas Gordon (Bailley Parker), Kiersten Zinkiew (Blair Delaurier), and Clarke Zinkiew; and her great-grandchildren Kailyn and Makenna Broome, and Eira Gordon.
A memorial service was held on Nov. 25, 2025, at St. James Anglican/Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Bob Lewis presiding.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Karen’s name to the Wellman Lake United Church Camp Box 516 Swan River, MB R0L 1Z0.
