Kay Lillian Staniland (née Hogg)
March 2, 1946 – January 28, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. After a courageous battle, Kay passed away surrounded by those she loved.
Kay was born in Big Woody, Manitoba, to Jack and Vida Hogg and grew up in Lenswood. It was at a dance in Lenswood where she met the love of her life, Allan. They were married shortly after she finished school, and Kay moved to the Staniland homestead near Minitonas, where they lived until relocating to Swan River in 2005.
After raising her children, Kay began her working career as a cook in a local restaurant and later moved into cooking and health care aide roles within the Swan Valley health care system. She was deeply involved in her community and gave her time generously—as a Brownie Leader, 4‑H Leader, Sunday School Teacher, cook at Wellman Lake United Church Camp, active member of the Minitonas Curling Club, and the Sinclair River community group.
Kay and Allan loved both playing and watching curling, cheering on the Blue Jays, and camping at Steeprock Lake. Kay found joy in baking, knitting, and creating thoughtful gifts for others.
But more than anything, Kay loved her family. She and Allan were married on July 16, 1964, and were blessed with three children: Marilyn (Ron), Lee (Lynda), and Bev. She was also blessed with many grandchildren and great‑grandchildren: Tyson (Kattie, Ivy, Scarlett, Thea), Amanda (Mike, Ava, Berkley), Kyle (Gabriel), Hillary (Lukas, Elita), Matthew (Lesha, Athena, Winston, Sterling), and Anthony (Allie, Fred, Opal, Marilla, Elowyn, Hickam, Whittaker).
Kay was a beloved sister to Vinetta, Marion, Ethel, Vida, Dorothy, Jean, Donna, Jackie, David, Betty, and Verneece. To Kay, blood was only part of what made a family. She created a warm, welcoming space where everyone belonged. Our extended family reaches far beyond those listed here, and she loved every one of us.
Mom had the softest heart, a generous nature, and a memory like a steel trap. She will always be remembered for her incredible baking, her love of Christmas, her soft baby blankets, and her never‑ending supply of treats. She will be deeply missed.
As per her wishes, a celebration of life will be held when the weather warms and we can gather outdoors. If friends so desire, donations in Kay’s memory may be made to the Swan River Lions Club Box 1263, Swan River, MB R0L 1Z0 or any other charity of your choice.
