Lorne Hrappstead Obituary

Lorne Douglas Hrappstead

1940 - 2023

On October 9th, 2023, Lorne Hrappstead, beloved husband of the late Iris Hrappstead, passed away at the age of 83.

Lorne was the second child of seven, born to Walter & Florence Hrappstead on July 4, 1940, in Swan River, MB. Dad was raised on the family farm in the Egilson District where he attended school until grade 9, completing his grade 12 in Swan River. He often shared with us many great stories of adventures living on the farm with his family.

Lorne married Iris Adams in 1960. They had 4 children, Velvet, Douglas, Deborah, and Rhonda.

Dad had many careers, from the Highways Branch to selling Fuller Brush, an Insurance Advisor for 47 years, and proudly, farming with his son-in-law Leon. Dad loved music from a young age. He taught himself to play guitar around age 12. Grandpa Walter played fiddle at barn dances and Dad would accompany him. From there, Dad took his guitar onto the party circuit. Later in life, he and our Mom started a band playing at many functions and had such fun! Dad loved his community, coaching hockey, and baseball and was an active member of the Elks and Rotary Clubs. He played baseball with Rays Angels, curled in the men’s league, was a member of the Swan River Golf and Country Club and held season tickets to the Swan Valley Stampeders. When his grandchildren got involved in sports, he was always there cheering them on. Dad loved sharing his life with his children and grandchildren, teaching them life skills, and sharing his love of music, travel, sports, and the outdoors. Dad was a true outdoorsman. He loved his garden and yard, had his guiding licence and spent hours hunting and fishing. Dad also had his pilot’s licence and would fly family and friends to wherever they thought they needed to go. Throughout his travels, be it work or personal, he made lifelong friends from all over the world.

This last year was tough on our Dad as his illness progressed. He moved into Victoria Landing in Brandon, MB and was very happy and well cared for there.  Dad lived his life fearlessly, with passion, a generous spirit, kindness, humour, and a loving heart which he shared with his many friends and family

He is predeceased by his loving wife Iris, parents, Walter & Florence, in laws Bill & Edith, brothers John, Floyd & Howard, sisters in-law Shirley, Evelyn, Irene, & Christine, brother-in-law Larry.

Left to mourn his passing are his children: Velvet, Doug (Elizabeth), Deborah (Roy), Rhonda (Leon).

grandchildren: Derek (Alex), Kaitlyn (Steve), Christopher, Justin (Sandra), Michael, Kelsey, Derek, Devon, Ryan, Tyan & Isla. great grandchildren: Lucas, Milena, Theodore, brother Ken (Audrey), sisters Judy & Margaret (Terry), Uncle Dalton Rooks, sisters’ in-law; Nita & Rose, brothers in law; Orville (Alberta), Richard, along with numerous cousins, nephews, & nieces, who all held a special place in his heart.
