Maria Holowachuk

We celebrate the life of a very special woman, our mother, mother-in-law, Baba and great Baba Maria Holowachuk of Swan River, MB (formerly Bowsman, MB) who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Swan Valley Lodge at the age of 97.

Maria was born in Shortdale, MB on January 21, 1926, to Nick and Jenny Pawluk. She married Wasyl (Bill) Holowachuk of Pine River on July 1, 1944. She was a member of the Swan River Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Maria’s legacy to us was her beautiful smile, her incredible patience, her kindness, her generous spirit, and her enduring love of family. Her hobbies included gardening, knitting, canning the garden vegetables, playing cards, spending time with grandchildren, playing the mandolin and most importantly, keeping everyone fed.

Her passion and joy were her family. She is survived by her son Terry Holowachuk (Joanne); daughters Dolores Weir (Tom); Ruby Patience (Larry); Donna Fothergill (Carl); Darlene Morrow (Sid); 13 grandchildren;15 great grandchildren; and sister Elsie Heck of Chiliwack, BC. Maria was predeceased by her husband Bill; parents Nick and Jenny Pawluk, brother Russell Pawluk, sister-in-law Lenora Pawluk and brother-in-law Raymond Heck.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Swan Valley Lodge for the care and compassion that Maria received for the past 6 years. She was very appreciative of their kindness. Special thanks to Francis and Charlene Hogan for their friendship and visits through the years (she loved the confetti cake).

Prayers were held on Thursday, March 23 at Swan Valley Funeral Services. The funeral service was held on Friday, March 24 at 10:00 AM from the Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Swan River, MB. Maria was laid to rest in the Bowsman Cemetery.
