Maria Nash

Maria Nash formerly of Cowan passed away July 28, 2023 at the age of 92 years.

Maria was born August 7, 1930 on the family farm in Cowan, Manitoba to Paul and Justina (Derhak) Motkaluk. She was the youngest of 8 children.

Maria went to Cowan West School for a few years before she moved to Winnipeg at 9 years old to help her sister with her children. She returned home at 15 years old where she worked on the family farm until she married David Nash on November 5, 1951.

They lived at Wellman Lake for a few years where Dave worked for the forestry and moved back to Cowan where the first of four children were born. In 1973 Maria went to work at the Swan Valley Personal Care Home where she became a nurse’s aide. Maria worked there for 25 years caring for the Valley’s residents and she loved every minute of it.

Maria cooked for a highway crew while her children were small and always helped at Cowan Weddings and Fall Suppers. She went to work at her daughters Fishing Lodge after her retirement until she was 79 years old. She was affectionately known as “Mom” by all who came to the Lodge. People still comment today how they miss her cooking.

Mom loved everyone and was always willing to help the community, helping cook for weddings, fall suppers and funerals. She was always willing to help someone that needed a ride or to learn how to cook something.

Maria’s home was always open to drop in for tea, coffee and a snack or a meal. We hope she is remembered not by what she did for herself but what she did for others.

Maria leaves to mourn her daughter Carol (Ken) MacLellan of Flin Flon, sons Perry Nash of Cowan and Barry Nash (Brenda) of Cowan. She also leaves 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Maria was predeceased by her husband David, son Alfred, her parents and sisters Pearl, Ann and Nellie, brothers Bill, Peter, Mike, and Steve

A memorial service was held from the Cowan Ukrainian Catholic Church on Saturday, August 12, 2023. Interment will take place in the Pinegrove Cemetery, Cowan, MB at a later date.
