Maureen Johnson Obituary

Maureen Elaine Johnson

1963 - 2025

Maureen began her life July 10, 1963, in Thompson, Manitoba. As a child she lived and went to school in Birch River and The Pas, where she graduated high school.

Growing up on the farm north of Birch River, Maureen’s love was to ride Smokey, usually bareback!  She chose to spend time outside helping with the chores – rather than cook or clean inside. Her love of animals started young – and horses and dogs were definitely her favorites. After high school, she decided she needed a dog, so Bear became her constant companion, going wherever she went. Maureen loved the outdoors. In Snow Lake, with her three dogs she would walk along the lake and trek through the bush. She even lived in the bush for awhile with no electricity! Eventually she bought a trailer and settled in the Trailer Court in Snow Lake. Her independence showed when she took it upon herself to build a porch, raising the walls by herself.

Her first job was for Johnson’s Travel (no relation) as an agent in The Pas. Next was CJAR Radio in The Pas as an office clerk and on-air personnel, then Snow Lake as a clerk with Forestry. That brought her to Winnipeg with Natural Resources, then Portage La Prairie. Once she retired, Whoop and Hollar Folk Festival was her favorite music venue. As a volunteer she was resourceful – a cherished part of the team/family! Her friends in Portage, the dog park, and Wellwood became her family down south. She truly enjoyed their company.

Maureen found Lucy – her final pet - lucky Lucy! Maureen had the patience to help Lucy deal with her people issues when everyone else gave up. Maureen was Lucy’s person!

Maureen dabbled in photography and in her younger years liked to draw. Her adventurous spirit and ‘outside the box’ thinking will be missed!

After a short illness, she passed away unexpectedly at home with Lucy by her side – September 17, 2025. Rest in peace Maureen. We love you and miss you!

Waiting for her at heaven’s gates are her father Konrad Johnson, her grandparents’ Ella/Otto Johnson and Julia/Tony Sikora; niece Angelica Paige Todoschuk; Aunts - Ruth Robinson, Jo Sushelnicki, Dolly Johnson, Nancy Johnson, Bertha Holian, Rose Orosz; Uncles - Leonard, Ben, Lyle Johnson, Red Robinson, Pete Holian, Alex and Joe Orosz, Walter Sikora; cousins Ashley and Cam Kobelka, Angela Mullin, Crystal Dawn Sushelnicki, and Dennis Holian.
