Melvin Spence Davy of Birch River, Manitoba passed away on October 26, 2022, at the age of 75.
Melvin was born in Birch River on June 11, 1947, the son of Allan and Annie (Wentzell) Davy. Melvin was educated at Birch River School and began farming at age 16. Melvin was versatile and hard working. As a young man, he worked as a soil sampler, a diamond driller, a truck driver and an employee of CFI. He returned annually to Birch River for the farming season.
In 1970, he married Pat Smith of Bowsman and they returned from The Pas to take up permanent residence on the farm. Their son Scott was born April 22nd, 1977. Scott was Melvin’s pride and joy, his friend and his respected farming partner. Melvin loved agriculture and showed a real aptitude for farming. In conjunction with Scott, they grew the farm over the years. He was mechanically inclined, and his Grandfather Otis once proclaimed that Melvin could fix anything. He grew mostly canola and wheat and briefly raised buffalo. As an employer, Melvin valued his trusted employees.
In his youth, Melvin was very athletic and was an asset to his high school teams. Later, he enjoyed curling and watching sports on TV. He also coached Scott’s youth hockey team. Melvin was an avid fisherman and recently bought a boat and was excited to take his granddaughter, Olivia, fishing. He liked to hunt, but in his later years he preferred to feed the wildlife. He could often be seen driving with his dogs inspecting the crops and stopping to talk to his neighbors.
Melvin was a kind man, but also strong and determined. He was very protective of his family. He loved having family dinners with Scott, Genie and Olivia at which he and Olivia engaged in mutual teasing. Melvin was very interested in his nieces and nephews. He spent happy times with his family and friends celebrating special occasions. Melvin was a good cook and often prepared meals for his guests. He enjoyed camping at Whitefish Lake and ice fishing where he socialized with friends young and old.
A niece said of him “I’ll always remember Uncle Melvin as someone who made everyone laugh.”
