Mervyn Stevens Obituary

Mervyn Stevens

1946 – 2019

Mervyn was born on the Shoal River Reserve. He went to school on the reserve until Grade 5, when he quit and moved in with his grandparents and was taught to live off the land. He also started logging at a young age. He did this for many years of his life. His co-workers nicknamed him “pusher”, because he started early and worked long hours and would push.

He met Tina in 1969. It was a good year. They had three children together and he helped raise four stepchildren with Tina. They married in 1990 … together for fifty years.

He also worked for Wuskwi Sipihk in numerous jobs. His favourite was being a commercial fisherman. He did this many years before retiring.

He enjoyed bingo, coffee houses, and loved country music and dancing. He was a great storyteller (ask anyone he knew) and was very generous. He would give you his last dollar if you needed it.

We will dearly miss his daily phone calls (wake up calls).

Mervyn was predeceased by his parents Hazel and Joseph Stevens; brother Willy Stevens; and sister Rose Stevens.

He is survived and remembered by his wife Tina Stevens; and three children Lori of Birch River, Manitoba, Craig of Swan River, Manitoba, and Tyson of Wuskwi Sipihk First Nation, Manitoba; by many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A wake service will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 from the Wuskwi Sipihk Community Hall starting at 4:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. from the Wuskwi Sipihk Community Hall with Pastor Fred Evans officiating. Interment will follow in the Crandell Cemetery, Birch River, Manitoba.

If friends so desire, donations in Mervyn’s memory may be made to the Diabetes Association.
