Olga Wowchuk

1942 – 2026

With profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Olga Wowchuk on Friday July 3rd at the Swan Valley Health Centre.

Olga was born in Cowan on November 8, 1942, to John and Sophie (nee Boyechko) Blazenko. She came from a family of four siblings, sisters Mary, Stella, Ann, and brother Tony.

She grew up on the family farm, and in her youth attended Cowan Ridge school.

 On October 15, 1960, she married Walter Wowchuk. Very shortly after they were married, they moved to Lynn Lake for employment. Olga a newly married bride would have followed her husband to the ends of the earth. The distance seemed so great that when she arrived in Lynn Lake, she believed she was at the end of the earth.

Olga was employed at the Hudson Bay Company and worked in the sports department. Her love of sports got her involved with the lady’s baseball team.

After spending three years in Lynn Lake her great desire was to return to her hometown and purchase land to farm., With much convincing Walter gave in and they bought the farm that they lived on their entire lives together. There the hard work began; Olga never wavered about the decision to farm. To add to her joy, they were blessed with a wonderful son Ted.

Her love for nature was immense, she often called particular parts of the farm a small part of heaven. A garden was priority. She planted a large garden for the family plus for” just in case”

someone may not have enough, so she gave.

Although much of her time was taken up with work at home, Olga spent countless hours doing volunteer work in her community.  Her love for the church came first on the list, fund raising was put into effect to keep the church from closing, to be kept open for a place to worship. At one particular fund raising she baked over one hundred loaves of bread.

She was also very involved with all events at the Cowan Hall, working along with the ladies in the kitchen preparing and serving the food. Olga was enlisted to be the Chief Perogy Cooker.

She was a person of many hobbies. Her talents showed in her intricate work of making Pysanky and she did many. She did beautiful artwork and oil paintings which she entered in the Swan River Exhibition and won first and second ribbons. Olga made many lifetime friends and will be sadly missed.

Olga was predeceased by her husband Walter, her parents John and Sophie Blazenko, sister Mary and brother-in-law Dave Chunick. To mourn her passing are her son Ted, her sisters Stella (Steve) Wowchuk, Ann Chunick, brother Tony (Jeanneau) Blazenko and many nieces and nephews.

Olga will be sadly missed. May she rest in peace.
