Olive Melba Ferland

1945 – 2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at the age of 76 years old, after a short illness.

Olive was born on January 17, 1945 in Duck Bay, Manitoba. She was raised in Camperville, Manitoba, Duck Bay, and Briggs Spur, Manitoba; and later moved to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, with her family and common law husband, the late George Chartrand. Later they moved to Minitonas, Manitoba and then back to Briggs Spur to spend the rest of her and George’s time together raising their children and grandchildren Jackie, Amanda, and the late Dennis Ferland.

Olive loved spending time with her family, her grandchildren, brothers, and sisters. When her brothers and sisters came over it was card day. We would occasionally let her win to make her happy. LOL.  She liked bingo, cards, and slots. Olive was a great cook and would make something to eat when they came and visited. Her daughter would ask her to make pies for funerals. She made anywhere around fifteen or twenty with no problems.

She was predeceased by her son Dennis Brent Ferland; daughter Jeanne Madeline Ferland; her common law husband George Chartrand; her parents Lizzie and Art Ferland; brothers Bert and Clifford; sister Patsy; and just recently her grandson Dennis Brent Ferland, whom she raised.

Olive will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her children Brenda (William), Calvin (Christine), David, Gordon (Tracy), and Bradley; grandchildren she raised Jackie and Amanda; sisters Shirley, Vivian (Frank), Audrey, Joyce (Morris), Bernice, Melvina, and Anita; brothers Lawrence (Margaret), Doug (Fern), and Joseph; as well as all the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Olive will also be missed by all her nieces, nephews, in laws and cousins.

Prayers were held from the Chapel of Swan Valley Funeral Services, Swan River, Manitoba with Father Norberto Monton officiating.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date when gathering limits are increased.
