1943 – 2025

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Sonia Emily Namaka on July 6, 2025, at the age of 83. Sonia is formerly from Pine River but was living in Dauphin.

Sonia is survived by her two children Debbie (Tom) Butler of Thompson, MB and Kevin Namaka of Dauphin, MB. She is also survived by two grandchildren Collin(Nikki) Butler and Eric (Sara) Butler, five great grandchildren Lucas, Bradley, Wren, Reese, and Blake Butler, three brothers and three sisters Eddy Soloway of Thunder Bay, ON, John Soloway of Midway, BC, Joe ( Ganie) Soloway of Yellowknife, NWT, Natalie ( Larry) Mather of Thunder Bay, ON, step sisters Alice Curle of Swan River, MB, and Helen Harmastki of Winnipeg, MB.

Sonia was predeceased by her husband Walter Namaka, mother Jean Soloway, father Bill Soloway, stepmother Sabina Soloway, brothers Clifford and Marcel Solway.

Sonia was born in Ethelbert, MB on May 8, 1943, and grew up in Pine River, MB. She married Walter Namaka in Winnipegosis, MB in 1960 and they had two children, Debbie and Kevin. Sonia and Walter moved to Thompson, MB in 1973 for work and spent over twenty years there raising their family. Sonia was a homemaker until her children attended high school and then worked at a local restaurant in Thompson. They then retired in 1995 and moved to Dauphin.

Sonia enjoyed camping at Moak Lake, north of Thompson with family and friends. Sonia was a talented crocheter and loved to give crocheted afgans as wedding gifts to her grandchildren. Sonia and Walter both spent many hours volunteering at the Legion and Army & Navy in Thompson. In her later years she could be caught on her porch with a cigarette and coffee watching the world go by.

Sonia will be deeply missed by her family and many who were blessed with her good cooking.
