Steve was born January 14, 1933, in Ethelbert hospital when the family resided in Sclater, Manitoba, and where Steve spent his school years. He spent his early years farming and then in the 60’s went to St Catherines, lived with his brother and worked at several jobs including General Motors. Becoming home sick he would return to Pine River many times. On February 21, 1986, Steve and Helena were married in a small wedding in Niagra Falls, Ontario. They relocated to Dauphin, Manitoba and he began his long career with Manitoba Highways Department located in Pine River and Cowan. He worked until the age of 79 and took great pride in his work and in helping his co-workers. He loved to walk, and many people will remember seeing him walking the many miles along the highway. He loved listeninmg and playing country music, his all-time favorite being Hank Snow. Steve was a hard worker, honest and a man of principal.
Steve is survived by his loving wife Helena, of Swan River, and stepson Wade of Poland, three Step grandchildren peter, David of Poland, and Elizabeth of England, and many nieces and nephews.
Steve is predeceased by brothers Michael and John; sisters Mary, Anna, Catherine, and Kay; father Michael Yurkewich and mother Mary Yurkewich.
The family wants to thank everyone at the Swan Valley Lodge for the loving care provided for the past two years.
