Victoria Kereluk Obituary

Victoria Kereluk

July 22, 1932 – March 9, 2024

It is with sadness we announce that on March 9, 2024, after a long stay in the hospital the angels came and took our sister, our aunt, and our friend Victoria away to those she loved the most. Victoria (Vicky) was born July 22,1932 in Ethelbert to Jean (Plustwa) Hretchka, one month after the passing of her father Nick Hretchka.  The first years of her life were spent surrounded with love by her mother and grandparents Ignace and Anna Plustwa in Cowan.  When she was three her mother married William Wowchuk and he became her father.  The family grew with the addition of her siblings Rose, Sylvestor, Hope and David.

Vicky went to school at the Cowan West and attended high school in Swan River living with the Hooper family.  She took a summer school course at Manitoba Teachers College and became a teacher at Highway School in Pine River.  Then it was off to Toronto with her cousin to experience the city.

In 1952 she married the love of her life Ernie Kereluk.  Together they went to Toronto where they worked for six years.  They returned to Cowan to take over the family grocery store and opened a gas station which they operated for thirty-five years until they retired.  All the children in Cowan knew they could count on Aunty Vicky for treats.

Vicky was an active member of the Cowan Ladies Association and The Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church in Cowan.  She was always willing to help in any way she could, especially with baking.

She was predeceased by her husband of sixty six years, Ernie, her parents William and Jean (Plustwa) Wowchuk, father and mother in-law Mike and Anne (Hlady) Kereluk, sister Rose (William) Atamanchuk , brother Sylvestor Wowchuk, brothers in-law Edward (Jean) Kereluk, John (Marg) Kereluk, Dan Kereluk and sister in law Mary (Paul) Wowchuk.

She is survived by her siblings Hope (Mel) Skulmoski and Dave (Renate) Wowchuk, sister in-laws Rosann Wowchuk and Edna Kereluk, and many special nieces and nephews.

Both Vicky and Ernie were proud of their Ukrainian heritage, and they passed on the traditions and stories to their nieces and nephews, hoping they would preserve and carry the traditions on.
