Wayne Homeniuk 1948 - 2017

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Wayne Homeniuk on September 13, 2017 at the age of 69. Wayne spent his final moments in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family.

Born on March 4, 1948 to parents, John and Sheila, Wayne was the eldest of three. He was raised on their homestead and attended Vesna School in the country near his home to Grade 5; then in Arran, Saskatchewan until Grade 9. Afterwards he followed in his father’s footsteps and worked on the family farm. This would be the first of many business ventures for Wayne, who had a passion for work.

He met the love of his life, Helen in 1973. They married one year later. Wayne worked as a bulk fuel truck driver for Gulf Oil in Benito, Manitoba, and later bought the business in 1975. After selling, Wayne put his mind to logging, then ran a saw mill from the homestead.

Wayne and Helen were blessed with four children, who spent their childhoods following along with their daddy in farm equipment, logging semi’s and bush camps. Wayne and Helen worked hard building a life full of learning and opportunity for their children.

After the kids were grown, Wayne and Helen purchased a service station in Benito in 2002. They named it “Family Hi-Way Service”, a suiting name, as all of Wayne’s family worked at the shop at some point over the years.

During all of his careers, Wayne remained devoted to farming and eagerly supported his wife’s passion for raising cattle. Wayne was a religious man, and loved listening to gospel music and live choirs. Those who knew Wayne, remember him as a selfless person who believed in giving to those in need before himself. He had no use for fancy cars or possessions, instead finding joy in aiding in the success of those around him.

In 2010, Wayne was diagnosed with Bone Marrow Cancer. Even through aggressive chemo treatments, Wayne refused to give up his love for life and work. He continued farming, working in the shop, and fighting his battle with courage and determination. It wasn’t until the final weeks of his life that Wayne retired to his home and spent his remaining time focussed on enjoying the company of his family, especially his grandchildren.

Wayne is predeceased by his parents, John and Sheila Homeniuk; in laws, Metro and Jenny Kluk; uncle, Sam Moffatt; and sister in law, Rhena Kluk.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Darwin (Jennifer) Homeniuk and their sons, Austin, Kayden, and Tyson; David (Mandi) Homeniuk and their daughter, Luna; Crystal (Dean) Homeniuk and their daughter, Kaylen; Carla (Ryan) Hamelin and their son, James; brother, Ken (Ruby) Homeniuk; sister, Linda (Ronald) Yaremko; brothers in law, Dan (Gail) Kluk, Joseph (Dianne) Kluk, and Nick (Liz) Kluk; and numerous nieces and nephews.
